How to Paint a Dog on a Painted Rock?
🎨 Supplies Needed
🖌️ How to Paint a Dog on a Stone
- Step 1: Begin by drawing your dog and bone onto the rock stone. The lighter the stone the better.
- Step 2: If you do have a darker stone like I had then it is a good idea to go over the outline with a white posca pen. This will help with the design.
- Step 3: Next I coloured in the dogs face with a peachy coloured posca pen.
- Step 4: I then painted the dog bone white with my white posca pen.
- Step 5: The next step is to add a black nose and mouth to your dog's character.
- Step 6: Colour the dog's eye with brown paint. Add colour to the dogs ears for extra detail.
- Step 7: Draw and outline the dog using a thin black posca pen.
- Step 8: Finally add Glitter to your dogs ears and anywhere else you would like and your dog rock painting is done.

💡 Pro Tip:Rest the rock on a slight tilt while painting facial features—this makes angles easier to judge and keeps curved lines looking proportionate from eye level.
🧑🎨 Expert Tips
- Snout Direction: Tilt the snout slightly to the left or right instead of painting it straight-on—it gives the dog more personality and a more natural angle.
- Ear Drop: Paint the ears with a downward curve that starts higher on the head—this helps create a relaxed, realistic pose rather than a flat layout.
- Body Suggestion: Use the lower half of the rock to shade in shoulder lines or paw hints—it implies the full dog form without overcrowding the face.
- Eye Focus: Keep the eyes close to each other but angled slightly outward to give a soft, friendly gaze rather than a rigid or startled look.
- Jaw Contour: Add a rounded line beneath the mouth for a subtle jaw—it gives the snout depth without needing extra outlines or shadows.
- Neck Edge: Soften the transition between the head and the rest of the rock by fading the color near the bottom—it helps the face blend more naturally.
💭 FAQs
Use just water and a brush instead of harsh cleaners. This removes dirt without introducing chemicals into your home or local drainage.
Only if sealed, use non-toxic sealers to prevent paint from flaking into the soil. This helps the artwork last while remaining more environmentally safe.
Absolutely—leaving slight gaps gives a stylized look, while edge-to-edge placement makes the figure feel whole. Both approaches can work depending on display style.
You'll need a smooth, light-coloured stone, a pencil, a white Posca pen, coloured Posca pens (peach, brown, black), a thin black pen, and glitter glue.
