🖌️ How to Make a Paper Sunflower
- Step 1: Print and cut out the patterns from the sunflower template. Trace the patterns on your selected colored craft paper and cut them out
- Step 2: Take a flower pattern and create creases on them. First, create crease from the center towards the tip of each petal. Next, create a crease in between each sunflower petal and towards the center.
- Step 3: Similarly, create a crease on the rest of the sunflower patterns (2 large yellow and 2 medium yellow flower patterns).
- Step 4: Create crease on the 2 small brown flower patterns as well. Take the spiral pattern and start rolling it from its outer end. Continue to roll towards the center and once you reach the center glue the roll with the center of the spiral pattern to secure it. Create a crease on the leaf cutouts as well.
- Step 5: Place any one of the large sized sunflower pattern on a flat surface and drop a small amount of glue on its center of it.
- Step 6: Place the other large sized sunflower pattern on the large flower, making sure that the centers of both flowers match. Be sure to rotate the second pattern so that the tips of the first paper sunflowers pattern and petals are visible.
- Step 7: Similarly, glue the medium sized sunflower patterns one by one on the top of the large ones.
- Step 8: Now glue the 2 small sized flower patterns (these are actually center of the flower); similarly, slightly rotate the second piece on the first piece to make sure that the tips of the first flower’s petals are visible.
- Step 9: Finally, glue the rolled flower on the center and allow the glue to dry.
- Step 10: Attach the leaves at the bottom side of the flower, but make sure that the leaves are visible from the top end and from the sides of the flowers.
💡 Pro Tip: Use a circular household object (like a lid) as a placement guide to draw a base outline—this helps younger kids build a balanced flower shape easily.
🧑🎨 Expert Tips
- Petal Spacing: Keep an equal gap between each petal around the circle—this preserves the sunflower’s round shape and avoids clumping on one side.
- Ring Formation: Form an open circular base using a cardstock ring to help guide where petals should attach for even placement all the way around.
- Overlap Angle: Slightly overlap each petal at the base by the same amount to maintain a uniform fan-like layout that mimics sunflower layering.
- Center Scaling: Cut the center circle slightly larger than the open space left by petals—it helps cover seams and anchors the entire structure visually.
- Second Row: If adding a second petal layer, position the petals between the gaps of the first row for more dimension without blocking the bottom layer.
- Glue Moderation: Apply glue only at the base of each petal to allow the top edges to lift slightly—this creates depth without making the craft bulky.
💭 FAQs
Lightly marking a center circle with equal tick marks creates guides for placement. This keeps the shape radial and evenly spaced.
They do—closer petals make the flower look smaller and denser, while wider spacing increases overall width without needing extra pieces.
Absolutely, proper layering with secure adhesion strengthens the overall structure. It ensures the sunflower maintains its shape and withstands handling.
Start by placing the first layer of petals evenly spaced in a circular pattern. Subsequent layers should be offset between the gaps of the previous layer to maintain balance.
