🖌️ How to Make the Pencil Topper Valentines Craft
- Step 1: Begin by cutting large heart shapes from the foam. You can do these in whichever colours you wish. Make them larger, so you can fit smaller hearts inside of them. To make our hearts nice and even, we folded the foam in half and cut out half of the heart to create two even sides.
- Step 2: Cut out your smaller accent hearts using the same method of folding and cutting. You want these to be slightly smaller so they fit inside the previously made hearts.
- Step 3: Add a dab of glue to the back of the smaller hearts and press them to the inside of the larger hearts. Use two different coloured hearts when you do this step so you can see the way they compliment each other. If you wish to add a third even smaller heart, go for it! Otherwise, proceed to the next step.
- Step 4: Now all you need to do is attach the heart to the pencil. So we could avoid poking holes in the hearts, we glued it directly to the top of the pencil as shown. Just add some glue (hot glue works best) and press into place. Your foam heart pencil toppers are now ready to be used!
💡 Pro Tip: Label the bottom of each topper with a tiny removable sticker—this helps kids quickly identify whose topper belongs to whom during group activities or classroom exchanges.
🧑🎨 Expert Tips
- Modular Sections: Design the topper in separate attachable pieces—like heart, ribbon, and emoji faces—so kids can swap and customize the look without rebuilding the entire topper.
- Snap-Fit: Incorporate small tabs or magnets at connection points for a secure but easily releasable hold, allowing children to change decorations quickly between classes.
- Quick Swap: Use slip-on sleeves to cover the pencil’s tip, enabling rapid removal and replacement of toppers without worrying about damaging the pencil or topper.
- Compact Storage: Encourage stacking toppers inside a small box or pouch by making them flat on one side, so kids can carry multiple designs without losing or crushing them.
- Balance Check: Before final glue, slide the topper onto a pencil and test tilt—adjust the weight distribution by trimming or adding small backing pieces until it sits perfectly upright.
- Grip-Friendly: Leave a smooth, unembellished band where fingers hold the pencil to prevent discomfort or slipping, ensuring the topper doesn’t interfere with writing comfort.
