I love to see rainbows in the sky. In fact, they remind me of my dad. My parents live in New Zealand and I really miss them. Last year when my mum and dad were visiting me here in the UK we went on a trip to celebrate my uncle's 40th birthday. He's not much older than me.
Anyway, on our way home, we turned a corner and I saw the most beautiful rainbow I've ever seen in my life. It was as if it was right there in front of us and the were touching the ground.
The rainbow was stunning and every time I see one now I remember the good times with my parents. Today we have a fun and exciting cotton ball rainbow craft for kids. I am sure you will love this. Enjoy.

🖌️ How To Make This Simple Rainbow Craft
- Step 1: Use metal snips to clip the bottom off of a white metal hanger. You just want to leave the hanging part at the top, with a small section of wire on either side to use as support for your rainbow later on.
- Step 2: Draw a rainbow shape on a piece of cardstock. Make it as big as you like, but make sure that it is big enough so that your wire hanger does not stick out from behind it.
- Step 3: Cut out the rainbow shape.
- Step 4: Cover the front of the rainbow cardstock shape with a layer of white school glue.
- Step 5: Press cotton balls onto the front of the piece of cardstock to cover the glue. There should be four cotton balls in each row. Let the cotton ball rainbow sit and dry once you have layered them all on.
- Step 6: Once the glue had dried, use a paintbrush to paint the cotton balls in each row a different colour. Use the colours yellow, green, red and blue.
- Step 8: Cut pieces of red, yellow, green and blue ribbon.
- Step 9: You will need two pieces of ribbon of each colour.
- Step 10: Glue one ribbon of each colour to the back of the cotton ball rainbow, below its coordinating colour of cotton balls. Now you're done. Hang your cotton ball ribbon rainbow and enjoy!
💡 Pro Tip: To add dimension, consider layering a second set of cotton balls over the first once dry, creating a more pronounced and textured rainbow effect.
🧑🎨 Expert Tips
- Arch Symmetry: Before attaching cotton balls, lightly sketch the rainbow arcs on the cardstock to ensure even spacing and a balanced curve throughout the design.
- Cotton Ball Preparation: Gently stretch each cotton ball to create a flatter surface; this allows for better adhesion and a smoother appearance when glued onto the cardstock.
- Color Application: Use a sponge or foam brush to dab paint onto the cotton balls, providing even coverage without oversaturating and maintaining the fluffy texture.
- Ribbon Alignment: When attaching ribbons, align them directly beneath their corresponding colored arc to enhance the visual flow and maintain color consistency.
- Drying Technique: Place the assembled craft on a flat surface and allow it to dry completely before hanging to prevent any components from shifting or detaching.
- Hanger Attachment: Secure the hanger to the back using strong adhesive and reinforce with a strip of tape to ensure stability when the craft is displayed.
💭 FAQs
Cotton balls are highly absorbent, allowing them to soak up liquid paint effectively. This property makes them ideal for creating vibrant, saturated colors in crafts.
Absolutely, thinner paints like watercolors are absorbed more readily by cotton, while thicker paints may sit on the surface. Choosing the right paint type influences the final appearance.
Layering multiple paint applications on cotton balls can intensify color depth. However, excessive layering may oversaturate the material, so moderation is key.
Yes, applying different paint colors to adjacent cotton balls can result in subtle blending at the edges. This technique can create smooth transitions between hues.
