Fun Jack O Lantern Art Project for Kids

Once the kids do this fun Jack O Lantern project, the kids are going to want to do more! That just means that you need to get it set up so that they can have fun! 

Why limit art and creativity when there are fun activities like this? They’ll have a blast and are sure to love the outcome. Plus, it’s a great way to have a DIY Halloween picture hanging up in your house! 

What Is a Jack O Lantern?

A Jack O Lantern is a lantern made from a pumpkin. It is usually carved with a face and lit with a candle inside. Jack O Lanterns are traditionally used to scare away evil spirits.

Jack O Lantern Scratch Art

One popular way to have fun at Halloween is to do scratch art. This pumpkin scratch art project is simple, easy, and super fun. You can make a whole bunch of these to hang on your front door or windows. All you need is a few supplies.

Supplies Needed for this Scratch Art 

  • Cardstock or Construction Paper
  • Crayons (broken crayons are perfect for this)
  • Black Paint
  • Dish Soap
  • Paint Brush
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pencil
  • Scratch Tool (chopsticks work well)

How to make this Halloween Pumpkin Art 

1.) Download the template. Print out. Cut out and set aside.

2.) Use crayons to color a white sheet of paper completely.

3.) In a bowl, you will need to mix black paint with dish soap. You only need a few drops of dish soap.

4.) Use a large paintbrush to coat the entire paper that you covered with crayons. Allow the paper to dry completely.

5.) Turn your black paper over and trace the template on the back with a pencil. Cut the template out.

6.) Use a tool to scratch art into the black paint. There’s no wrong way to do it.

7.) You can leave your pumpkins as they are or glue them onto a bright or black piece of cardstock or construction paper.

Tips for making this Halloween Art Activity 

Have the kids change up the colors of the crayons that they use! This is the best way to make the jack o lantern look different every single time! 

Plus, it’s a fun way to encourage the kids to think outside the box and be creative in their actions! The more pumpkins that they want to create, the better!
