What Is the Best Way to Melt Chocolate?
When I was a little girl I would always help my mum to melt chocolate over the stove. We placed chocolate into a bowl and then the bowl into a pan of boiling water. Mum would supervise and help us to know when the chocolate was ready.
In fact I will never forget the time my sister and I attempted to make a cake for my Mum’s birthday. We were 4 and 5 years at the time and we placed a whole lot of ingredients into a plastic bowl, placed it over the stove and turned the ring on.
Everything melted and whilst we couldn’t understand why mum would be so upset at us, I sure understand now. The stove was covered in melted plastic and her best bowl ruined.
The most traditional way to melt chocolate would be to do so over the stove.
Now we have the microwave it can be much easier and quicker to place chocolate melts into a microwave or you could opt for a Wilton Melting Pot which is an absolutely fantastic way to melt chocolate.
It’s much easier and can be a safer option when decorating cupcakes and baking with kids.

How to Make Baking With Kids Fun?
The whole idea of baking with kids is to have fun and enjoy the process of measuring, weighing, mixing and creating. If your anything like my family you will enjoy baking cupcakes first. You can then enjoy cupcake decorating once your Octopus cupcakes are out of the oven and cooled down.
Every family is different and whether you opt to follow a cupcake recipe, use a ready made cupcake mix or purchase ready made cupcake buns, the cupcake decorating part can be very fun.
To make baking fun with kids you might like to do the following:
- Look up Creative cupcake ideas online with your children to plan the cupcakes you are going to make.
- Visit the store together to find the ingredients for your Octopus cupcakes.
- Get the kids to measure, count and prepare the ingredients.
- Wear fun baking aprons or a chef hat.
- Let the kids take the lead.
- Remind children that the cupcakes don’t have to look perfect and that it’s all about having fun baking.

How to Make Octopus Cupcakes
In a small bowl, melt the chocolate per package directions.
Poke a toothpick into a marshmallow and dip into the chocolate until fully covered.
Set the marshmallow down on a parchment lined baking sheet and remove the toothpick. Repeat this for all the marshmallows.
Press 2 eyeballs on the front of each marshmallow before the chocolate hardens. Leave these set until the chocolate is hard.
Frost each cupcake with the blue frosting making sure to put extra in the middle so the frosting slopes downward a little.
Take a knife, touch it all around the frosting, and gently pull up so the frosting will look like water waves.
Take a rope of the licorice and cut into 4 pieces. Unwind the strings so you will have all the purple pieces separated. You will need 48 of these pieces for the octopus legs.
Lay 8 licorice legs over the top of each octopus cupcake so they drape down over the frosting hanging off the edges a bit.
Set an octopus head on top of each cupcake right in the center over the tops of the legs.
Press them down a bit so they stay on the cupcake and so it looks like the head is attached to the legs.
