How To Make A Colour Changing Mug With Cricut

To make this colour changing Mothers Day Mug, you’ll need to choose a heat activated colour changing viynl. I went with hot pink but there are a number of colours you can choose.

Step 1: Choose Your Design

Before diving into the project, think about what design you want on your mug. You can either create your own design or choose one from Cricut’s library of images and fonts. Some popular Mother’s Day designs include “Best Mum Ever”, “Love You Mum”, or a simple yet heartfelt “I Love You”. Once you have your design, upload it to the Cricut Design Space software.

Step 2: Cut Your Vinyl

Using the dimensions of your mug as a guide, resize your design in the Design Space software and adjust the cut settings according to the type of vinyl you’re using. Then, load the vinyl onto your Cricut machine and let it do its magic.

Step 3: Weed the Design

After cutting the vinyl, use a weeding tool to remove the excess vinyl from your design. This process requires patience and precision, so take your time to avoid any mistakes.

Step 4: Transfer the Design

Once you have your design fully weeded, cut a piece of transfer tape slightly larger than your design. Then, carefully place the transfer tape over your design and use a scraper tool to ensure it adheres properly.

Step 5: Apply the Design on the Mug

Now comes the fun part – applying your design onto the mug! Gently position the transfer tape with your design onto your mug and use the scraper tool to firmly adhere it. Slowly peel off the transfer tape, leaving your design on the mug.

Step 7: Reveal the Magic!

Once your mug has cooled down, fill it with a hot beverage of your choice. As the heat from the drink warms up the mug, your design will magically appear in its true colours! It’s sure to put a smile on your mum’s face every time she uses it.

Our color changing vinyl changes from hot pink to light pink when the mug has hot water in it. A great Mother’s Day gift for sure and fun craft for the kids to make for Mum.

FAQ’S

What is a Cricut machine and how does it work?

A Cricut machine is a cutting tool that uses precision blades to cut materials such as vinyl, paper, and fabric. It works by connecting to a computer or mobile device and using software to design and control the cutting process.

How Do You Use Heat Activated Color Changing Vinyl?

Heat activated color changing vinyl is used just like regular adhesive vinyl. The only difference is that after it has been applied to the surface, it requires heat (like from a hot drink) to reveal its true colors.

can I Use Any Type Of Mug For This Cricut Project?

As long as the mug is ceramic and can withstand high temperatures (up to 375°F), it can be used for this project. Avoid using plastic or metal mugs as they may not hold up well in the oven.

What is weeding and why is it important in this project?

Weeding is the process of removing excess vinyl from a design before transferring it onto a surface. It is important to ensure that the final design looks clean and professional, without any unwanted parts of the vinyl showing.

It also ensures that the design adheres properly to the surface without any bubbles or wrinkles. This step requires patience and precision in order to achieve the desired result.
