A favorite photo of the kids, a grandparent or the family dog can become a gift the recipient paints with their own hands.
Custom paint-by-numbers kits turn that photo into a numbered canvas and ship it with matching paints and brushes.
The catch is that kits differ more than their product photos suggest. Canvas shape, color count, framing and delivery time all change how well the finished painting fits the photo and the occasion.
We compared five kits sold for adult gift buyers. Our top pick leads on configuration choice and starting price, and we pulled every detail below from each seller's product page.

How We Compared the Kits
We reviewed each seller's custom kit page in November 2026 and compared six things: canvas sizes, orientation, color count, framing, included supplies and stated delivery time. This is a research-based comparison, not a hands-on painting test.
Prices are the displayed starting prices for each kit's default option. Size, color count, framing, shipping and tax can all change the total at checkout.
1. Paint Me Like
If the photo should decide the shape of the canvas, Paint Me Like is the most flexible kit in this roundup. Choosing portrait for a tall shot or landscape for a wide family photo keeps the composition intact instead of forcing an awkward crop. The team also reviews every photo before printing, and you can email a picture first to see a preview rendering.
Key features:
- 96 configurations from 8 sizes, 2 orientations, 2 frame options and 3 color levels
- Sizes from 12 x 16 to 24 x 32 inches
- Unframed, or framed and pre-assembled for hanging
- Canvas, 24 to 48 paint pots, 3 brushes and instructions included
Starting price: $29.99, shown against a $42.99 regular price, with free shipping on orders of $60 or more.
Delivery: ships within 2 business days and usually arrives within 7 to 14 days of ordering.
Keep in mind: personalized kits aren't returnable, though the seller sends a free replacement for damaged orders reported within 72 hours of delivery.
2. Canvas by Numbers
Canvas by Numbers suits buyers who want the most detail and the widest choice of presentation. Its Master level goes up to 60 colors, the highest ceiling in this comparison, and custom kits ship from the USA. You can also email a photo before ordering for a free photo check.
Key features:
- Sizes from 12 x 16 to 24 x 32 inches
- No frame, DIY frame, pre-stretched or canvas board formats
- Detail levels of up to 24, 36, 48 or 60 colors
- Numbered canvas, pre-mixed acrylic paints, 3 brushes and a reference sheet included
Starting price: $39.95, with the 36, 48 and 60 color levels adding $15, $30 and $45.
Delivery: 3 to 7 business days in the US, or 7 to 14 business days for canvas board kits.
Keep in mind: previews aren't provided by default, so contact support if you want one before production.
3. Number Artist
Number Artist is a strong pick when the recipient wants a complete starter kit in the box. Alongside the canvas and paints, it lists six brushes, a color card, a reference sheet and a paint by numbers guide. The seller accepts a wide range of subjects, from portraits and pets to buildings and vehicles.
Key features:
- One painting area size of 16 x 20 inches
- Rolled canvas or framed stretched canvas
- 24, 36 or 48 colors
- Linen canvas, numbered paint pots, 6 brushes, color card, reference sheet and guide included
Starting price: $34.95 sale price, against a $39.95 regular price.
Delivery: allow 7 to 14 days to create and deliver.
Keep in mind: with only one canvas size, it won't suit buyers planning a larger piece or a square photo.
4. Figured'Art
Figured'Art is the choice for a statement piece on a large wall. Custom sizes run from 16 x 20 up to 32 x 47 inches, and a graphic designer checks each photo's quality before the workshop starts.
Two screws and two wall hooks come in the box, so the hanging hardware is covered.
Key features:
- Sizes from 16 x 20 to 32 x 47 inches
- No frame on every size, DIY frame up to 24 x 30 inches and full framing at 16 x 20 inches
- 24 or 36 colors
- Linen canvas, acrylic paint pots, nylon brushes, 2 screws and 2 wall hooks included
Starting price: $39.90 sale price, against an $80.00 regular price, with free delivery stated.
Delivery: custom kits typically arrive in 1 to 3 weeks.
Keep in mind: photos must be at least 1000 x 1000 pixels, and there's no return or refund if you're unhappy with how the picture turns out.
5. Winnie's Picks
Winnie's Picks suits patient gift planners who want clear photo guidance. Its guidelines favor well-lit close-ups, simple backgrounds and portraits of no more than four or five people, and a designer checks every picture. Sizes reach 20 x 40 inches for wide shots.
Key features:
- Sizes from 16 x 16 to 20 x 40 inches
- Canvas shipped rolled in a tube
- Standard, Detailed or Premium palettes with 24, 36 or 48 colors
- Acrylic paint set, 4 brushes, reference sheet and instructions included
Starting price: $42.95 sale price, against a $49.95 regular price, with free US shipping on all orders.
Delivery: allow 3 to 5 weeks on average, as custom kits are made at the factory and shipped from overseas.
Keep in mind: that window is the longest here, so order well ahead of a birthday or holiday.
What to Check Before You Order
Start with the photo, because no kit can add detail the original doesn’t have.
Pick a sharp, well-lit image with a clear subject, then choose a canvas shape that matches it.
A painted portrait of the family dog also makes one of the more personal gifts for pet owners.
Next, match the color count to the picture and the painter. Fewer colors make a quicker, simpler project, while 36 to 48 colors suit faces, fur and soft shading.
Framing is the decision buyers most often skip. A rolled canvas ships in a tube and may need stretching or framing later, while a stretched or framed canvas gives a firm surface and can go on the wall once finished.
Finally, work backward from the gift date. Delivery estimates here range from 3 business days to 5 weeks, and return terms for personalized kits vary by seller, so read them before you pay.
FAQ'S
Use a sharp, well-lit picture with a clear subject and a simple background. Close-ups work better than wide group shots, because small faces lose detail once the image is split into numbered areas.
Match the orientation to your photo. A single person or a sitting pet usually fits portrait, while group photos and scenery usually fit landscape.
More colors mean finer shading and a longer project. A 24-color kit suits simple photos and first-time painters, while 36 or 48 colors suit portraits, pets and detailed scenes.
No. Each numbered area matches a numbered paint pot, so the painter only fills in shapes. Larger canvases and higher color counts simply take more patience.
Plan on several sessions rather than one afternoon. Sellers in this comparison estimate roughly 6 to 15 hours for a typical kit, depending on size and color count.
No. The popular form of paint by number traces back to the Palmer Show Card Paint Company, where employee Dan Robbins developed the kits with the company’s owner. Custom kits apply that same numbered-canvas method to your own photos.
