I love sweet potatoes or Kumara as my grandmother called it. In fact if you ask me what my favourite food item is, I’d answer sweet potato no questions asked. There are lots of things you can make with sweet potato and this old fashioned sweet potato pie recipe is one delicious pie!

You c make this easy sweet potato pie recipe all year round but it’s a great fall dessert and a wonderful dessert for Thanksgiving and even Christmas. Enjoy!

Southern Sweet Potato Pie

You can make the traditional Southern sweet potato pie in your oven or you can add a delicious marshmallow meringue to your sweet potato pie. Either way, this recipe is so tasty and it’s one the whole family is just going to love!

How Long to Bake Sweet Potato Pie?

This sweet potato pie recipe requires mashed/cooked sweet potato or Kumara and once the filling is ready in the crust, it takes 50 minutes to cook in the oven. The kitchen is going to smell so so good!

Can You Freeze Swet Potato Pie?

Yes! You sure can. In fact sweet potato pie is a great dessert to freeze. You can eat it fresh but if you have a lot of cooking to do, you can bake this sweet potato pie recipe in advance and just add the meringue after the pie is defrosted.

Ingredients for Easy Sweet Potato Pie

  • 1 9 inch pre-made pie crust
  • 3 C mashed sweet potato (About 4-6 medium to large sweet potatoes)
  • 1/2 C unsalted sweet cream butter, melted
  • 3 large eggs, room temp
  • 1/3 C light brown sugar
  • 1/2 C sugar
  • 1/2 C sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 C evaporated milk
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 3 tsp grated orange zest
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Ingredients for Marshmallow Meringue

  • 1/4 C sugar
  • 1 7oz jar of Marshmallow Creme
  • 3 large egg whites, room temp
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt

How to Make Sweet Potato Pie

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Poke the sweet potatoes with a fork and bake for 40 minutes or until tender.

Let cool, then peel and remove any dark spots.

In a standing mixture, beat the sweet potatoes, butter, eggs, sugars,
milk, and all the spices until combined and smooth.

Pour the pie filling into the pre-made pie crust.

Bake in the oven for 50 minutes or until set.

Remove from oven and place onto a cooling rack to cool to room temp.

Once cooled, place pie into the fridge for overnight.

How to Make Meringue Topping

In a large bowl, scoop the marshmallow fluff into the bowl and set aside.

Using a standing mixer, beat the egg whites, salt and cream of tarter
until foamy.

Gradually beat in the sugar into the egg whites until stiff peaks form

Gently fold in the egg whites into the marshmallow fluff until fully
incorporated.

Spoon the marshmallow meringue onto the cooled pie.

Using the back of a spoon, create peaks.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees or you can use a kitchen flame torch.

Using the oven, place pie in middle rack for 5-8 minutes or until the
meringue is lightly browned.

Allow meringue to cool before serving
