Kids can try out grown-up jobs through career-themed role play, using props and settings put together from things already around the house.
The play doesn't need to look polished or accurate. What counts is that children take on a role, make decisions inside it and see what the work involves.
Taking on different roles gives children a way to practice communication, problem solving and empathy, and it often shows which kinds of work catch their interest.
The five ideas below suit most ages from preschool up, and each needs only a small box of props and a bit of floor space.
Jump to:
1. Doctor's Office or Vet Clinic
Set up two chairs as a waiting area, then hand the doctor a toy stethoscope, a clipboard and some cloth bandages.
Stuffed animals make willing patients, so the same corner becomes a vet clinic with a change of sign.
Children practice speaking gently, asking questions and explaining what happens next, which are habits that carry into any job that involves caring for others.
2. Hair Salon Corner
Dolls with long hair make good clients, and a small table with a mirror, wide-tooth combs, soft brushes and a spray bottle of plain water is all the setup you need.
Some kids who love styling keep that interest into adulthood, and a few of them go on to enroll in hair school.
Encourage the child playing the stylist to ask their client what hairstyle they'd like before picking up a comb, giving the play a natural beginning.
3. Bakery or Café Counter
A counter works especially well after a family outing, since children act out places they've seen firsthand with more confidence and detail. Offer a paper menu, play money and a notepad for orders.
One child takes orders, another prepares the food and a third pays, so counting, reading and taking turns become part of the game without anyone calling it practice.
4. Post Office or Delivery Route
Cardboard boxes turn into mailboxes in a few minutes, and a handful of envelopes with names on the front is enough to start a route.
The carrier sorts the mail by name or color and walks it to rooms around the house.
Older children can write addresses and stamp letters, while younger ones enjoy handing out mail and collecting thank-you drawings.
5. Construction Site
Give the crew a paper plan, a toy hammer, a measuring tape and some cardboard bricks, and the building project is underway.
Talk through who builds the walls and who checks the measurements before work begins.
Children see that a big job gets finished when each person takes a part, and a finished tower gives the game a satisfying finish.
Whichever idea you try first, leave at least half an hour for the scene to develop and let the kids decide how it unfolds.
Adults can join as customers or patients, but the children should stay in charge of the story.
Notice which role they return to, since that favorite may point to what they'd like to explore next.
