If you’re heading out on a work trip, you want to make the most of it while you are out there. You don’t want to travel all the way to somewhere like The Netherlands just to stay in your hotel room and attend those meetings that you have travelled for. There are so many amazing things to do and see when you’re in Amsterdam, and you want to make the most of it while you are here. There is no guarantee that you’re going to be going back any time soon, and it would be a huge shame to go, but not to experience anything.

In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at how you can make the most of your trip to Amsterdam, even if you’re working. Keep reading if you would like to find out more!

Get Yourself in Business Class

The first thing that we’re going to suggest is that you get yourself in business class. If you’re going to be flying for work, see if your boss will upgrade you to business class because of the distance. If you are the boss, then splash on this little luxury for yourself, as it’s the perfect way to get your trip off to a good start. You don’t want to be stuck back in economy for hours on end if you can avoid it, especially if you’re looking to get some work done on your way over.

If you can get quite a fair chunk of your preparation done on the way out, then you have more time to spend exploring the wonderful city that you’re heading to, so that’s a massive bonus. We’re sure that you probably want to get some rest as well though, so why don’t you divide your time, spending half of it doing some work, and half of it enjoying the comfort of your upgraded seat.

Sort Out a Beautiful Hotel

Again, something that you should splurge on a little is a nice, comfortable hotel. There’s no need to simply try to go for the cheaper option, especially if you’re going to be staying for a few days or even longer. You want to be comfortable so that you can get your work done, and also get a good night of sleep. There is so much to do, and you’re going to have to try to find a way to fit this all in, which might seem impossible if you’re not sleeping.

Take a look at hotels before you book your flight over so that you can be sure you’re getting a good place to stay. If you want some more privacy, then you might want to look into some of the air bnb options that are available in Amsterdam. This is probably cheaper than a hotel, and you get more space to yourself, but it will mean that you will be catering for yourself, so that’s a choice you have to make.

Go to All of Your Work Meetings

You came to Amsterdam to attend all of your work meetings with certain people, so make sure that you are going to them all. Hopefully, they have been scheduled for the first couple, or the last couple of days on your trip so that you have some time to relax. If they have been scheduled for the start then this is great as you can get it all out of the way, and then explore Amsterdam without worrying about what is going to happen in your meetings. If they are scheduled towards the end, then this gives you time to prepare in the evenings and spend the days seeing what’s on offer.

Visit as Many Museums as You Can

Now, we’re going to start looking at what you should do when you’re in Amsterdam and have some spare time. First, we’re going to recommend that you start by visiting as many museums as you can, or at least as many as you are interested in. If you are a World War 2 buff, then you might be interested to visit the Anne Frank House where you can see where the Frank family hid. You can learn a lot about what it was like to have to hide in the annex for this family, and it gives you a whole new insight into that time period.

However, the most common place for people to want to visit is the Rijksmuseum. This museum holds over 800 years of Dutch history, culture and art, with some of the masters like Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Vermeer being on display. This is the national museum of The Netherlands, and certainly not a place that you want to miss out on if you are interested in Dutch history at all.

Experience a Coffee Shop

We’re sure that you have heard all about the infamous coffee shops in Amsterdam where you can purchase products. These coffee shops are completely normal like you would have near you with the smell of coffee wafting out the door and into the street. They are a fantastic place to meet with friends, to use as a place to relax, and so much more. But, the real attraction is the fact that you can purchase edibles such as space cakes, brownies and gummies if this is something you’re interested in. Of course, we do not recommend trying these if you are working.

You don’t have to have any of these products if you’re visiting a coffee shop in Amsterdam, but you will find it a lovely place either way. If nothing else, the vibe is something that you should experience.

Take at Least One Night Off

While you are in Amsterdam, you should take at least one night off so that you can head out and explore the night life here. There is so much to do and see, and if you venture down to the red light district, you will find so many bars and clubs. You can even get an Amsterdam red light district tour if you want someone to take you around so that you know the hot spots, and if you want to learn more about the history of Amsterdam’s oldest area.

You should allow yourself a night off to explore, even if you don’t want to party. Everything looks better in the night time where things are lit up and there’s just so much beauty everywhere. It’s the same as everywhere, it’s nice in the day, but you need to experience it when the sun goes down.

Try the Food They Have On Offer

When you think of Dutch cuisine, you might first think about cheese as this is what The Netherlands is well known for. While you’re there we highly recommend that you try out their cheese as it is second to none, but there is more than just cheese! If you want to try some weird combinations, then patat met pindasaus is definitely something that should be on your list. You can find this at most street vendors, so keep your eye out! It’s basically chips with peanut sauce, which might sound weird, but is actually delicious.

You also don’t want to miss out on the delights of frikandel which is a large sausage, but tastes so much better than you would believe! See what else you can find while you’re travelling around here, and don’t be afraid to try new things. Chocolate on bread is common here in the form of Vlokken or Hagelslag, but don’t be afraid to embrace it.

Dutch People Are Kind, so Be Kind Too

The final thing that we want to say that will help you make the most of your trip to Amsterdam is that you should be kind. Dutch people are super laid back and kind, and you should find that if you are too, you might be able to make some friends along the way. Be polite, be courteous, and if you’re going to ask for help, try learning some basic Dutch phrases just so that they can see that you are making the effort.

Trust us when we say that these are probably some of the most laid back and relaxed people that you are ever going to meet, so you don’t need to be nervous about asking for help when you need it.

We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see how you can make the most of your trip to Amsterdam, even if you are working while you’re there! There are so many fantastic things that you can do, and just because you have to take some time to work, doesn’t mean that the whole trip has to center around this. There are so many wonderful things that you can do while you are visiting, and you should take the chance to do it while you can, as you never know when you’re going to be coming back. Now you know some of the things that you need to know about Amsterdam, as well as some of the things that you should do while you’re there. Have fun!
