The game uses a standard 52-card deck with Aces ranking high. The defining feature of Spades is that the spade suit is the permanent "trump" suit.
This means any spade card will beat a card from any other suit. Success hinges on working with your partner to meet the "contract" you both bid on.
How Do You Play the Game of Spades? The Deal and the Bid
To begin, a dealer distributes the entire deck, giving each player a 13-card hand. After everyone reviews their cards, the bidding phase starts with the player to the dealer's left.
Each person states how many tricks they expect to win. This is their "bid."
Your team's contract for the round equals your bid plus your partner's. Accurate bidding is widely considered one of the most crucial skills in Spades.

- If your partner bids "2," your team's total contract becomes five. Together, you must win at least five tricks.

The Gameplay: Winning Tricks and Breaking Spades
The player to the dealer's left leads the first trick by playing a card from any suit except spades. The fundamental rule is to "follow suit"; if you have a card of the suit that was led, you must play it.
If a player cannot follow suit, they may play a card from another suit or "trump" the trick by playing a spade.
The highest card of the suit originally led wins the trick, unless a spade is played. Any spade played wins the trick.
This leads to a critical rule: you cannot lead a new trick with a spade until the suit has been "broken," meaning a spade has been played on a previous trick where a player couldn't follow suit.
Scoring and Finishing the Game
Scoring is where your bidding accuracy pays off. If your team meets or exceeds its contract, you score 10 points for each trick in your contract. For a contract of five, you earn 50 points, even if you win six tricks.
The extra trick is an "overtrick" or "bag," worth one point. Be cautious, a common rule is that accumulating 10 bags results in a 100-point penalty.
If your team fails to meet its contract, you "go set" and lose points, typically 10 for every trick you bid.
The game continues with new deals until one team reaches a predetermined score, often 500 points, to win the match.
