When styling your home, you have to consider a lot of factors to get the look and feel that you want. Ideally, you want to create a warm, welcoming space that people will want to spend time in. As it’s your home, this space should also be personal to you and your style.

One thing that often goes overlooked is the importance of lighting in a space. But here are some ways to make the most out of the lighting in your property.

Bright and Dark

Light and shadow are excellent tools in home styling that sometimes go overlooked. At the most basic level, most people light their homes for practical purposes. You need light to see, it’s as simple as that.

However, light has more of an impact on how a room looks. For example, a brighter room often seems larger and airier, while a dark room seems more warm and cosy. You don’t necessarily want every room to be incredibly well lit.

Generally speaking, if you want to relax, then there’s nothing wrong with a less well-lit room. However, more lighting is ideal for productive areas, like kitchens where you want to see what you’re doing more clearly. Good lighting is also useful in bathrooms or anywhere where people are applying makeup.

You can add more lighting by simply adding more lights to a room, or changing the lightbulbs. Large windows create large areas of natural light, and mirrors can reflect light, which make an area look brighter.

If you want to make an area more cosy, then provide different levels of lighting options. Lamps rather than ceiling lights provide a more measured level of lighting. You can also invest in dimmable lights.

Another option is to get lightbulbs that can change colours. White light is brighter and colder, so it’s good for the aforementioned productive areas of your home. However, yellow lights are kinder on the eyes and create a more homely atmosphere.

Natural Lighting

One of the most important sources of light is natural light. It’s free and looks nice, but natural sunlight also has some surprising health benefits. For starters, natural light can improve your mood and make you more productive, which means that the more natural light you can have in your home, the better.

Large windows are a great way to get more sunlight into your home, and if you work from home, then it’s a good idea to choose a well-lit area. Of course, you don’t always want light from outside streaming into your home. Blinds, curtains, and shutters allow you to control how much light you have and provide privacy.

For example, roman blinds allow you to easily block a window. Not only that, but a patterned or coloured blind can add a splash of extra personality to your home. Net curtains allow another option to control natural light, as they diffuse it without getting rid of it entirely.
