Can a parent with shared custody and one free evening a week find a lasting partner on an app known for quick matches?
The custody schedule sets the free evenings before any match is made, and a match who expects dates three nights a week will not fit that calendar.

Single Parents in the Dating Pool
In 2019, a Pew Research Center analysis of 130 countries found that 23% of American children lived with one parent and no other adults. That was the highest share of any country studied and more than three times the global figure of 7%.
Parents who date again after a divorce or separation bring fixed commitments that most younger app users lack. Swiping at 10 p.m. after bedtime leaves less time for a new relationship than a 24-year-old has on open weekends, and the relationship moves at the pace that time allows.
Lasting partnerships after a first marriage are common. Pew found that in 2013, 40% of new marriages in the United States involved at least one previously married spouse.
Among previously married adults, 64% of men and 52% of women had remarried. Those figures cover parents and non-parents alike and provide a realistic baseline before the first match.
Scheduling Around Custody
The custody schedule sets a single parent's dating calendar. With the children on weekdays and every other weekend, a parent may have 2 free evenings every 2 weeks.
Dates fit into those evenings or into school hours. Holidays and summer breaks change the pattern again, since a parent may have the children for weeks at a time and dating stops until the next exchange.
Planning dates for nights when the other parent has the children protects family time. A coffee after school drop-off or a weekday lunch also works for a first meeting.
An evening date means finding and paying a babysitter for someone the parent has not met yet.
A short video call before meeting solves part of that. Ten minutes on a screen confirms the match looks like the photos and allows them to talk about the children. If the call goes badly, nothing has been spent on childcare.
Partnership Goals After Divorce
Goals after divorce range from a partner who will eventually live with the family to a relationship kept separate from the household for years.
A parent looking for a sugar daddy can put that in the first lines of a profile. Companionship for adult evenings, with no plan to blend families, is also worth stating up front. Naming the goal early saves time when free evenings are limited.
Tinder Users and Their Intentions
Tinder is the most widely used platform among Americans who date online. In a Pew Research Center survey conducted in July 2022, 46% of Americans with any history of online dating had tried it.
Among recent users of these services, 44% said meeting a long-term partner was a major reason they used them, against 40% who named casual dating.
Since December 2022, Tinder has let users post their intentions on their profiles. Its Relationship Goals feature offers six options, from "long-term partner" to "short-term fun" and "still figuring it out."
More than half of users added one during testing. Choosing "long-term partner" and passing on "short-term fun" profiles cuts down on messages that go nowhere.
Tinder's own 2022 data put more than half of its users between 18 and 25. Parents in their 40s are searching a smaller part of the user base and should expect fewer matches in their own age range. Setting a short distance filter keeps matches close enough for a weeknight coffee inside a two-hour window.
Profile Details About Children
Stating in the profile that there are children settles a question that would otherwise come up on the second or third date. One line such as "two kids, shared custody" is enough.
Adding their ages helps as well, because a parent of toddlers and a parent of teenagers have very different amounts of free time.
Matches who object will pass without taking up an evening. A rough note on availability, such as free on alternate weekends, shows a match the likely pace from the start.
Children stay safer when they're not in the photos at all. Their pictures show strangers what they look like. Combined with a first name, a neighborhood or a school logo on a shirt, a photo can also show where they spend their days.
Co-parents can agree on basic rules in advance. One is how long a relationship should last before a partner meets the children.
Another covers overnight stays by partners when the children are home. Settling these early keeps arguments away from the children.
Introducing a Partner to the Children
For a single parent, a relationship usually becomes serious when the partner meets the children. Rebecca Woolf writes Romper's column on dating as a single mother.
She argues that parents should base the decision about when to introduce a child to a new partner on the child's comfort, and that the answer differs by family.
She also notes that an introduction does not require the child and the partner to form a relationship right away.
A first meeting can be short, such as a walk in a park or an afternoon at a playground. The parent can ask the child beforehand what would make it easier.
After that, the partner's place in the children's lives usually grows slowly. Parents in new blended households often keep rules and discipline in their own hands at first, while the partner starts as a friendly adult who visits.
Teenagers often want more distance from a parent's partner than younger children do, and the parent can let them set it.
Safety Measures for Parents
Safety planning has higher stakes for a parent, since the children depend on that parent coming home.
In April 2024 Tinder began rolling out a feature that lets users share details with family and friends through a single link.
The link contains the location and time of the meeting, a photo of the match and a link to the match's profile.
Plans can be entered up to 30 days ahead, and the company said about half of its users under 30 already shared these details with friends.
Meeting in a public place and giving the babysitter an expected return time add two more safeguards. The home address can stay private until the relationship is established, since that address is where the children sleep.
A Serious Relationship on a Parent's Schedule
On a parent's schedule, a serious relationship means a partner who knows about the children, has met them, and is still around once custody weekends and school nights set the calendar.
Tinder can supply the introduction. The goal stated on the profile and the timing of that first meeting with the children determine what comes after.
