7 Ways to Prepare Your Child for Starting ABA Therapy in Georgia
These 7 steps offer practical tips for preparing for the first sessions while supporting your child's comfort and individual needs.
1. Talk to Your Child About What to Expect
Children cope better with the transition when you provide clear, gentle information. Describe what is going to occur in simple language that is age. and communication. appropriate for your child. Use simple words rather than medical jargon when discussing therapy, and refer to it as a fun time for play/learning.
For instance, you could say, "A new teacher is going to come over and play with you and my blocks and practice some words with us."
- Explain the routine: Describe how a typical session works. Tell your child that therapy may include playing games, learning new skills, and practicing daily habits to help them share their feelings.
- Keep it positive: Use positive but realistic language. Avoid saying therapy will be very easy, because learning new skills takes time and practice.
- Use familiar tools: If your child uses a communication board or speech device, use the same tools when talking about therapy so they know what to expect.
2. Introduce a Consistent Routine Before Therapy Begins
Autistic children feel safest when their days have clear, predictable patterns. In the two weeks before your first session, establish steady wake. up times, regular meals, planned play periods, and calm bedtimes. If your therapy sessions are scheduled for the afternoon, start setting aside that same time each day for quiet, focused activities.
Visual schedules are a great tool for this step. Put up a simple visual schedule on your fridge using picture cards or a small dry. erase board to show what happens throughout the day.
3. Practice Short Activities That Build Learning Readiness
Change plans don't have to involve hours of grueling effort. Instead, emphasize brief fun activities that will get your child used to simple interactions. Play together for a few minutes (3. 5) using building blocks, coloring books, simple puzzles or bouncing a ball.
- Practice together: Use short play sessions to practice taking turns, following simple instructions, and asking for a break or help.
- Keep it fun: Add quick game breaks or your child's favorite games to keep practice enjoyable.
- Follow their pace: Avoid making your child sit for too long. Give them breaks and let them learn at a comfortable pace.
4. Help Your Child Become Comfortable With New People
It takes time for a child to feel comfortable with a new therapist. Give them relaxed chances to meet friendly people in familiar places, such as a park or a relative’s home.
Before the first session, ask the provider for a photo or short welcome video from the therapist. This can help your child know who to expect and feel less uncertain.
When the therapist arrives, let your child watch from a comfortable distance until they are ready to join. Share your child’s favorite activities and signs of frustration with the therapy team early on.
5. Identify Your Child’s Interests, Needs, and Comfort Items
Good therapy builds directly on what your child already loves. Write down a simple list of your child's favorite toys, games, songs, shows, and snacks. Therapists use these favorite items to build trust and make early sessions feel like playtime.
- Note triggers: List distress triggers and sensory needs, such as loud noises, bright lights, or clothing textures.
- Keep comforts nearby: Have a favorite blanket, stuffed animal, or noise. canceling headphones available.
- Share care needs: Tell local autism therapy providers about allergies, dietary concerns, and special care needs.
6. Prepare Your Child for Transitions and Separation
Moving away from a fun game or saying goodbye to a parent can cause normal worry. Practice smooth transitions at home using visual timers or simple "first. then" statements (such as "First put on shoes, then go to the park").
If your child is attending a therapy center in Atlanta GA, schedule a quick visit to walk through the center before their official start date. If therapy takes place at home, choose a quiet, comfortable space and keep your home warm and relaxed. If separation is part of the plan, work with your therapist on a gentle, step. by. step drop. off routine.
7. Communicate With Your Child’s ABA Therapy Team Before the First Session
Working closely with your child's team is the best way to ensure success. Talk with your lead therapist before your first appointment about what the first couple of sessions will be like. Share helpful details about your child's strengths, home habits, and your top goals as a family.
- Ask about support: Ask how the team handles distress, sensory overload, or challenging behaviors.
- Understand the process: Ask about parent training, scheduling, and how they track progress.
- Check coordination: If your child sees other specialists, ask how the team coordinates care.
What Should Parents Bring to the First ABA Therapy Session in Georgia?
Gathering necessary materials in advance helps you support your child instead of chasing paperwork.
- Important Documents: Copies of your child's diagnostic evaluation, school IEP forms, insurance cards, completed clinic intake forms.
- Communication Tools: Your child's speech device, charger, picture binder, or communication cards to ensure your voice is always there.
- Sensory & Comfort Items: Favorite toys, blankets, fidgets, chewies, or noise. canceling headphones.
- Daily Essentials: Extra clothes, cups, and favorite snacks for extended periods.
- Parent Notes: List of questions you have about goals, schedules, and what you can do as a parent.
What If Your Child Resists Starting ABA Therapy?
It is completely normal for a child to show hesitation, cry, or try to walk away when therapy first starts.
New faces, routine changes, and new expectations naturally make children feel cautious.
View this reaction not as bad behavior, but as a clear sign your child needs extra time and comfort.
Work directly with your therapist to spot what is causing the stress. Clinicians can slow down the pace, lower expectations, and focus entirely on fun play until your child feels safe.
Ethical therapy respects your child's comfort signals and adapts to their emotional needs. Preparation is about creating safety, not forcing automatic compliance.
Moving Forward With Confidence Through ABA Therapy
Preparing for ABA therapy in Georgia does NOT mean your child needs to learn new skills first.
Maintain a sense of routine at home, pack comfort items, and stay in touch with local ABA therapy providers to help your child feel safe as they develop.
Spend some time helping your child feel calm, understood, and supported as this new adventure starts.
