Glasses can slide down your nose when you exercise, fog up in a warm room, or get misplaced when you need them most.
Contact lenses bring their own challenges, from daily cleaning to dry eyes and the cost of buying replacements.
If you have dealt with these problems for years, it is understandable to wonder whether there is another option.
LASIK is one procedure that may help reduce your need for glasses or contact lenses. For people exploring vision correction in Los Angeles, it may make everyday activities easier.
However, it is important to understand what the procedure can do, who may benefit, and what to consider before deciding.
How LASIK Can Change Your Daily Routine
LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery that changes the shape of the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye.
This helps light focus more clearly on the retina, which can improve vision in people with certain common vision problems.
The procedure can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. These conditions often mean relying on glasses or contacts to see clearly at different distances.
For some people, reducing that dependence can make ordinary activities feel simpler. You may be able to swim without worrying about your glasses, exercise without contact lenses shifting, or wake up and see clearly without first reaching for your frames.
A study published in the journal Ophthalmology followed people for three years and found that 88% of former contact lens users who had LASIK reported strong satisfaction with their vision at the three-year mark. Among former glasses users who had LASIK, the figure was 77%. These results are encouraging, although individual experiences can differ.
4 Things to Know Before Considering LASIK
LASIK can be useful for the right person, but choosing surgery involves more than wanting to stop wearing glasses. These four points can help you decide whether it is worth exploring.
1. Check Whether You Are a Suitable Candidate
Not everyone who wears glasses or contact lenses is a good candidate for LASIK. Your age, eye health, prescription, corneal shape, and general medical history can all affect whether the procedure is suitable.
This is why a full eye examination is essential when considering lasik eye surgery in Los Angeles. Doctors need to examine your eyes before recommending the procedure.
They typically look for a stable prescription that hasn't changed significantly for at least a year.
They also check corneal thickness and health, tear production, and other parts of the eye to determine whether LASIK is a suitable option.
Some people may have thin corneas, severe dry eyes, or other conditions that make LASIK a poor choice. If that applies to you, another type of vision correction may be a better option.
2. Understand What the Procedure Involves
LASIK is usually a short procedure. The surgeon uses a laser to reshape the cornea, helping correct the way light enters the eye. Numbing eye drops are used, so general anaesthesia is not usually needed.
The laser treatment takes around three to five minutes per eye. The full visit takes longer because it includes preparation, checks, and instructions.
Many people notice clearer vision within hours, but recovery varies. Your eyes may feel dry or uncomfortable at first, and you will need to follow the surgeon's instructions about eye drops, rest, and follow-up visits.
Don't plan your return to normal activities based only on someone else's experience. Your surgeon can advise you on when it is safe to drive, work, exercise, and use eye makeup again.
3. Choose a Surgeon Who Takes Time to Assess Your Eyes
It can be tempting to compare clinics by price or how quickly they can schedule surgery. However, a careful assessment and clear answers to your questions should be part of the decision.
When choosing a provider, whether here in Los Angeles or beyond, take time to compare providers, ask about the risks, and understand what recovery involves.
A good consultation should cover your vision goals, eye health, prescription, and possible risks. You should also understand what happens during recovery and what support is available if you have concerns afterwards.
The Maloney-Shamie-Hura Vision Institute also discusses alternatives such as PRK and implantable contact lenses for people who may not be suitable candidates for LASIK.
Take your time during this stage. A surgeon should explain your options clearly rather than pressure you to proceed.
4. Weigh the Benefits Against the Risks
The biggest appeal of LASIK is the chance to rely less on glasses or contact lenses. Still, the procedure cannot guarantee perfect vision or freedom from corrective eyewear for life.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that some patients experience dry eyes, glare, halos around lights, or difficulty seeing clearly at night.
Some people may still need glasses or contact lenses after surgery, while others may need further treatment. Serious complications are uncommon, but they can occur.
Age is another factor. LASIK does not prevent presbyopia, the age-related change that makes close-up reading harder for many people in their 40s and beyond. You may still need reading glasses later, even if your distance vision improves.
Before deciding, ask your eye doctor about the risks, likely outcomes, and alternatives.
Final Words
If glasses and contact lenses have become a daily hassle, LASIK may be worth discussing with an eye doctor.
For suitable candidates, it can reduce dependence on corrective eyewear and make activities such as exercise, travel, and getting ready in the morning more convenient.
The key is to balance that potential freedom with a clear understanding of the limits and risks.
Start with a thorough eye exam, ask honest questions, and consider alternatives if LASIK isn't right for you.
You do not have to rush into a decision. The right choice is the one that fits your eye health, lifestyle, and expectations.
