If you’re like most people, the thought of moving is enough to send you into a panic. There are many things to think about like packing, unpacking, settling into your new place, and all the costs that come with moving. Thankfully, moving doesn’t have to be expensive. With some proper planning and execution, you can reduce your moving costs and make the moving process simple and stress-free. Here are six ways you can reduce your moving costs and start saving.

Get Quotes From Multiple Companies

Multiple quotes will help you compare prices and find the best deal. Some companies offering professional move management services will provide free quotes which you can compare and settle for one closest to your budget. Some companies also offer freebies which you can take advantage of. They may include free boxes, packing tape, and other supplies. You can also plan with the company to customize your package to suit your budget instead of a fixed one that may not be relevant to you.

Different companies also offer various packages, so consider these while choosing and pick one that is closest to what you need. Based on the quotes you get, hire a moving company that is within your budget or most affordable without compromising on the quality of service.

Declutter

Get rid of unwanted items before you move. This will reduce your luggage and save you money packing and moving supplies. It’s advisable to only relocate items with significant practical, sentimental, or monetary value and items that will cost you more to replace than to move.

One good way to declutter is to sell off what you don’t need to get some extra money. The best way to do this is to start early to avoid selling off your things at a throwaway price. With fewer items to move, you can hire a smaller vehicle for the move, which will be cheaper.

Do Your Own Packing

Self-packing may take time and effort, but it will save you money in the long run. To make your move simple and avoid being overwhelmed at the last minute, you can pack your stuff up gradually whenever you get the chance.

Start by packing items that you rarely use to avoid unpacking several times. Enlisting the help of your loved ones can also save you money on packing costs. You can cut costs by looking for free or cheap boxes and moving supplies from friends, family, or local businesses around you.

Another alternative is using materials you already have in the house for your packing needs, like towels and blankets. Work with a list to ensure you get all the packing supplies you need to avoid inconveniences.

Be Strategic With Your Moving Times

Scheduling your move for mid-week or off-peak seasons will often result in lower rates. Some great times for moving are winter and early spring because the demand is low. Planning a move in the middle of the month will also be cheaper than at the end or beginning. There is also less demand; therefore, lower prices between Monday and Thursday as more people prefer moving over the weekend.

Drive Yourself

One of the biggest costs when moving is the vehicle. By driving yourself during your move, you can save lots of money. Try and fit as many items as you can into your car. If the distance isn’t too long you can also make several trips and move what you can.

You can also borrow a truck from family or friends and eliminate the need to hire a moving truck. Renting a moving trailer or truck while doing all the packing and moving by yourself can also be much cheaper than hiring a moving company.

Moving houses is always hectic, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. By taking the time to consider all the different factors, plan and prepare, you can save yourself a lot of money on your next move. You can also significantly cut moving costs by packing yourself, sourcing cheap packing materials, and using what you already have to pack.
