What Is a Headband Wig?

A headband wig is a long strip of synthetic hair that attaches to your own hair via an elastic headband. The wig is usually made from heat-friendly fiber meaning that it can be straightened, curled, or styled into any style.

Why You Need a Headband Wig?

A headband wig is perfect for those that work long hours and doesn’t have the time to style their hair for hours, or if they want a quick fix. It’s also great for vacations as you can wear it swimming in the sea/ocean without worrying about ruining your natural hair.

The headband wig is so popular because it can be transformed into any style with heat tools such as curling irons, flat irons, and the likes. Plus you get to enjoy a new hairstyle every day without causing damage to your natural hair.

Types of Headband Wigs

There are several different types of headband wigs to choose from. here is a breakdown of a few of the different headband wigs you can try.

  • Curly headband wig
  • Straight headband wig
  • Short afro wig
  • Blonde headband wig
  • Short headband wig
  • Braided headband wig
  • Kinky straight headband wig
  • Straight with a slight wave

Curly Headband Wig

Curly headband wigs are a great option for those with naturally wavy or permed hair. It’s also great if you want to go curly temporarily and straighten it the next day.

Straight Headband Wig

A straight headband wig is a great option if your hair is naturally curly, as you can wear this wig all year round and not worry about going out in public with wet or curled hair.

The same goes for those that have permed their natural hair – a straight wig will allow you to wear your hair straight for a few days or weeks.

Short Afro Wig

If you want an edgier look, then try a short afro wig. This headpiece is perfect if you have natural curls and need something quick and easy to put on when going out at night. If it’s too good to be true, you can style it with your favorite styling gel for a more polished look.

Blonde Headband Wig

Whilst my daughter is mixed race and naturally brown and curly-haired, my hair is straight and blonde. A blonde headband wig is a great way for me to change up my look and is perfect if I’m going out for dinner with family or friends at night.

Short Headband Wigs

The options are endless – you can even buy a short headband wig that’s edgy and perfect for those that want to change up their look.

Many people opt for this style of the wig when they have shorter hair as it will be easier to put on quickly.

Braided Headband Wigs

A braided headband wig is another great option for those that have short hair. It’s perfect if you want to change up your look daily and can be worn with natural, permed or heat-styled hair.

Kinky Straight Headband Wig

If you have naturally straight hair, then a kinky straight headband wig is great to wear in the summer when it’s hot and humid outdoors. It will allow your scalp to breathe whilst still looking stylish.

Straight With a Slight Wave or Curl

A slightly wavy/curly style headband wig is perfect if you want to go straight but still look natural.

How to Wear a Headband Wig

You can wear the headbands two ways, either underneath or over your real hair. I prefer wearing it under my natural hair as this looks more realistic but over your hair works well if you are trying to hide a bad hair day.

How to Install a Headband Wig

To wear the headband underneath your natural hair, firstly attach it tightly around your head using an elastic band.

Next, take sections of your own hair and pull them through the hole in the center of the wig before securing with bobby pins or grips – pinning from top to bottom.

How to Apply Headband Wig Over Yor Hair

To wear the headband over your hair, firstly attach it tightly around your head using an elastic band and then pull sections of your own hair through the hole in this center before securing with bobby pins or grips – pinning from top to bottom.

I recommend brushing all loose ends of your natural hair into a low ponytail before wearing a headband wig to prevent it from slipping.

How to Style Headband Wig

I prefer wearing my hair straight as I think this look works well with both short and long lengths.

If you’d like to wear your hair curly then use a curling tong or wand on low heat to create loose waves before securing them in place with bobby pins or grips.

Headband Wig Styles

There are so many different ways to style a headband wig and you must find the right look for your face shape.

I would recommend trying out loose waves if you have thin or fine hair as this will make it appear thicker and more voluminous, whereas tight curls suit those with thick hair best.

Long Headband Wig

For a more edgy look, try wearing your hair in an afro with the headband over it.

I recommend brushing all loose ends of your natural hair into a low ponytail before wearing this style of the wig to prevent it from slipping.

How to Style Your Front Hair

If you want to wear your hair down with the wig, use a strong-hold styling gel or hairspray on all of your natural hair before braiding it.

Once dry, take the braid out and brush through any loose strands using a bristle brush before securing into place at the front using grips – pinning them in

Headband Half Wig

Another great option is a half wig. This means that you can wear it as a headband and also take the top section of hair off to create two different styles – one for daytime and another for the evening.

How to Half up and Half Down

To wear your hair in an updo with the headband, firstly attach it tightly around your head using an elastic band.

Next, take sections of your hair and pull them through the hole in this center before securing with bobby pins or grips – pinning from top to bottom and then twisting the hair into a low bun at the back of your head.

Low Pigtails

A very cute style is to wear your hair down in two low pigtails. To achieve this look, firstly attach the headband tightly around your head using an elastic band and then brush all of your natural hair into a high ponytail at the back of your head before dividing it equally into two sections on either side of the center -pinning them into place.

To style the wig, use a small amount of hairspray or styling wax on your fingertips before gently backcombing all of your natural hair at the roots to create volume and then teasing it slightly for extra texture.

Next, smooth down any flyaway strands using a bristle brush before tying the top section of each pigtail into a knot.

Low Ponytail

If you want to wear your hair in a low ponytail with the headband, I recommend brushing all of your natural hair into a high ponytail at the back of your head before securing it tightly using grips or elastics.

Use some hairspray on your fingertips and gently tease out any loose strands around the front section of this style

Side Braid Wig Style

Another great look is a side braid wig style. To achieve this, firstly brush all of your natural hair into a high ponytail at the back of your head before taking a section from around one ear and dividing it into three equal strands – move to the side and braid before adding some hairspray to help it stay in place.

There are several advantages to owning a headband wig. Here are some reasons why you need one in your life:

  • It’s cost-effective – instead of buying hair products and tools that are specific to your natural hair, you can now use one headband wig for many hairstyles
  • It’s convenient – you can now achieve two different looks with the same headband wig instead of having to do your hair twice

Headband Wigs – Pros and Cons

A headband wig allows you to switch up your look with ease. It’s especially great if you are someone who is constantly changing their style or has a busy life that doesn’t allow much time for styling.

You will have more flexibility when it comes to washing and caring for your hair when you own a headband wig. You can also use it in both casual and formal situations – whether that’s for work or an evening out.

What Are the Pros of Wearing a Headband Wig?

The biggest pro for me is how easy it is to wear, I can take my time applying them and they stay in place all day long enabling me to do other things rather than spend hours styling.

The main downside is that some people find it difficult to attach the headband at the back of their natural hair (especially if your hair is very thick). Also, they aren’t ideal for

What Are the Cons of Wearing a Headband Wig?

The only con I can think of is that they don’t stay in place overnight. This is easily resolved by adding clips to your natural hair.

Can You Wear a Headband With a Wig?

Yes if you have a wig and a headband you can use them together to create the same look without the need to buy a new one.

Make Your Own Headband Wig Solution.

Making your own headband wig is a great solution to achieving a similar look to that of your wig. Here’s how:

You’ll need:

– Headband and hair elastics (buy elastic bands in bulk)

– Bobby pins and bobby pin pads (I recommend buying these from Amazon as they are readily available, cheap, and lasts for years). You can also use grips or hair clips instead of bobby pins.

– Hair spray or hair glue (optional)

How to Make Your Own Headband Wig:

  1. Firstly, take the hair elastics and place them around the underside of your natural hair where you want to wear it as a headband before looping each one over two sections on top of your crown.
  2. Next, you will need to create a braid or plait by taking sections of your natural hair and dividing them into three strands before pinning the end against your head.
  3. Now take one strand from each section that has been pinned up at the back – loop over two sections on top of your crown before placing an elastic band around it.
  4. Repeat steps three and four until you have a full headband. You can add in extra braids/plaits if desired before completing this step to create a thicker look. Now it’s time to attach your wig!
  5. Take the top section of your hair that has been pinned back and pull out two strands then use bobby pins to pin it to the underside of your wig.
  6. You can then spray/apply hair glue to ensure that this section is secure and stay in place all day long.
