If not dealt with, anxiety can be an unpleasant life-long challenge. Common feelings range from fear, dread and worry, all of which can take a toll on your emotional and physical wellbeing.

These uncontrollable and debilitating feelings can cause you to lose rational thinking, often expecting the worst outcome when there is no valid reason to worry. Rather than letting anxiety continue to take over your life, consider treating it with any of the following methods:

  • Breathe – In the middle of an anxiety attack, stop and take a deep breath through your nose and slowly let it out through your mouth. As you’re breathing out, picture your worries exiting your body with it. Try to relax to lower your heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Listen to music – Soothing or uplifting music can help you get anxiety relief. Additionally, singing along with your favorite tunes releases endorphins and oxytocin, both of which are known to improve your mood.
  • Write in a journal – Taking some time to write down your thoughts can help to release worrisome feelings. It’s also a good idea to write if you’re trying to find possible anxiety triggers. By documenting your day-to-day experiences, you’ll be able to find commonalities.
  • Get active – Whether you’re exercising, gardening or cleaning the house, staying active takes your mind off of anxiety, and it improves the overall symptoms. While engaging in these actions, your brain releases neurochemicals that boost mood and confidence.
  • Seek help – You may need to ask a professional for assistance if you cannot get your symptoms under control. Ask your doctor if a prescription or non-prescription anxiety medication can help. Also, consider talking to someone you trust or a psychologist. Discussing your feelings can be beneficial.

Knowing Your Anxiety Triggers

Because anxiety is caused by several factors, including an individual’s genetic makeup and the environment, people experience it in different ways and have unique anxiety triggers. However, some triggers are shared among many people.

Identifying what causes your anxiety can help you to manage it better. Here are some possible triggers:

  • Caffeine
  • Finances
  • Conflict
  • Stress
  • Medications
  • Public speaking
  • Routine changes

It’s possible to have more than one trigger. The most important thing you can do is identify your triggers and learn proper coping methods, which may include over-the-counter calming medicine or another technique.

Trying a Holistic Approach

Some people aren’t comfortable taking medications unless they have to. Although there are several options available to treat anxiety, you may find that a holistic approach may work for you. If you have children, consider trying some natural remedies for teenage anxiety before going to medication.

Some holistic approaches to try are aromatherapy, yoga and meditation. It’s also a good idea to have your doctor check your vitamin levels as a deficiency in D, B or Omega-3 fatty acids can negatively affect anxiety symptoms. You can take supplements to get these levels where they need to be.

Starting Fresh

Make a promise to yourself to start the new year with a new you. Don’t let your anxiety hold you back. Contact a reliable company to point you in the right direction for anxiety relief.
