There are lots of reasons for changing your career, but is accounting the right path for you? If you’ve been debating using your existing skills to pursue a new role or wondering whether you should retrain entirely, this blog can help you make a more informed decision. Becoming an accountant can be an incredibly rewarding career journey, so if you think you’d be a good fit, there are a whole host of reasons your life could change for the better. Here are some that you should consider:

Contents

  • Opportunities for Learning
  • Become An Expert In Your Sphere
  • Job Security
  • Flexible Working
  • All Backgrounds Welcome

Opportunities for Learning

Accountancy gives you the opportunity to keep learning. Because the field is so varied, you’ll always be able to improve your skills, take new exams and climb your way up the career ladder. Depending on the job you’re in, you could be getting to grips with software for payroll or advising executives on the best move to make when they’re faced with financial difficulties. You could even choose to specialise in forensic accounting, which would really challenge your thinking skills.

Remember that some companies will even fund your progression as an accountant, so look for a job that’s invested in your development if that’s something that appeals to you.

Become An Expert In Your Sphere

Accountancy is a huge subject, with many niche specializations. If you retrain as an accountant you can focus on an area in particular that interests you and become an expert in that individual accounting sphere.

There are various areas you can look at, such as tax, lease accounting, or use of right-of-use assets, otherwise known as an ROU asset depending on where you’re practicing your accounting. You’ll have to learn the basics first and put the effort into learning bookkeeping, IFRS and GAAP principles before really focusing on an interest, but once you’ve done your time the accounting world will be open for you to explore.

Job Security

No matter how well a company is doing financially, they’re always going to need an accountant. What’s more, you’ll be able to work for businesses in just about any industry, because your skills can be transferred seamlessly. Even if the company you work for starts struggling, they’re unlikely to make the people who can help them get out of their money troubles redundant first. And if you are unfortunate enough to lose your job, you’ll be able to find work again quickly whether in your home country or abroad.

Flexible Working

While lots of accountants will work in an office, many of them choose blended approaches to work. Because an accountant’s job can be done from just about anywhere, it’s easy to work from home if that’s something you’re interested in. Once you’ve been working for a while and have some experience, you might even decide to become a freelancer or start your own accountancy agency. You’ll never feel like you’re stuck in the same job for the rest of your life when you’re an accountant, so it’s perfect for anyone who likes to keep things moving.

All Backgrounds Welcome

You don’t need a degree to become an accountant, so it doesn’t matter what education you have or what jobs you’ve worked before. While working in a similar field will help you pass accountancy exams more easily, it’s really not essential to secure a job. This is what makes accountancy so attractive to people who are changing their careers after years and years of working.

If, after reading this, you like the idea of becoming an accountant more and more, then get started on your journey today. This could involve researching specialist areas, looking into exams or booking a consultation with a career coach.
