Sharing is caring!

Congratulations! You’re moving to your dream home. But now comes the hard work.  Deciding what to take and what to give away or dispose of, what to pack first and how, so many things to organize.

Packaging up all your belongings can be a daunting task but there are a lot of ways to make the task easier, hassle-free, and stress-free. These seven packing tips for moving will get you ready for this new milestone in your life.

Sort By Category

If you’ve watched Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, this process is not new to you.

Organize your belongings not by room but by category. Instead of spending a day cleaning out your kitchen, spend the afternoon sorting out the clothes. Scour through your closet, check your hamper, and empty the laundry room until you have all your clothing in one place. Then sort them.

Do the same process for your shoes, books, and documents. Decluttering before you pack can also be super useful.

Get Rid Of Unnecessary Items

One of the most important packing tips to keep in mind when moving is to make sure that you don’t move anything that you don’t need.  You don’t want to move into your new place with all the things from your old place that you no longer use or need, it just makes more to pack, more to move, and more to clean up and get rid of later.

Now that you’ve sorted your belongings by category, get organized before moving day:

XAAZ~ bSell, donate, and throw away the items you don’t need.

Get rid of items that are either broken, unused, or mismatched.

Consider selling any items you don’t need in a yard sale.

Label Everything And Take Photos

As you move things into your packing boxes, be sure to stay as organized as possible to make it easier for you to unpack once you’re in your new home.

  • Package all the screws and bolts from the pieces of furniture in individual ziplock bags and label them.
  • Color code the moving boxes by rooms.
  • Label the boxes on the side for an easier view instead of on the top flap.
  • Take photos of all your electronics and how they are wired. Having these photos will make it easier for you to set up your TV as soon as you move into your new home.

Pick The Right Moving Day

Book your moving day at least a month out so you can plan. If you have a more flexible schedule, find the cheapest time of the month.

Most moving companies are busier on the weekends. Skip the weekend chaos and schedule your moving day for a Tuesday or Wednesday, when the fees should be cheaper. Whether your moving locally or you are long distance moving, Calgary Movers is an example of a removal company that can help you move your belongings to your new home with as little stress as possible

Create A Number System

If you want to take your box labelling to the next label, create a number system.

As you organize your stuff in boxes, take note of each item you put inside. You can then   write the list in a Google Sheet or you can use apps like Sortly.

Then, give each and every box a number.

This makes looking for certain items easier and faster.

If you’re looking for your laptop charger, instead of digging through each and every box you have with “electronics” written on it, you can just look for box #10.  Because you checked the list and know that’s where you put it.

Use A Small Box For Heavy Items

It may sound obvious for some, but this is a common moving mistake. Forget about the struggle of carrying a large box full of books!

Fill small moving boxes with heavier items. Then use the larger boxes for lighter things like towels, pillows, and linens.

Be Careful When Packing Breakables

You should consider packing Tupperware, glassware, dishes, bakeware, and silverware separately.

Using crumpled newspaper, corrugated cardboard, or bubble wrap can prevent the fragile items from breaking. You can also use paper plates or dish towels to create a buffer.

  • Pack the breakables in smaller boxes and label them as fragile.
  • Place the plates and other glassware in vertical rows instead of stacking them in the box.
  • Use thicker boxes specially made for breakable items.

With a little planning, you can quickly move all your belongings safely and stress-free in your new home. With these packing tips for moving, it’s possible to move without worrying about your belongings.
