The Very Hungry Caterpillar Craft For Kids

Today on The Inspiration Edit we have a fantastic craft activity for kids based on the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar craft. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a popular book throughout the world and one that we certainly love.

Reading regular with young children is a great way to help build basic literacy skills. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is great for teaching children about the days of the week, for introducing basic counting skills and teaching about the life cycle of the caterpillar.

Providing children with fun and engaging activities such as this foam craft is a fantastic way to extend existing interests, to get children talking, developing social skills and building fine motor skills.

This craft is super fun, easy and simple and you can make this in the preschool setting, in the classroom or at home. I hope you enjoy this tutorial and do let me know if you try it out yourself.

How to Make This Caterpillar Craft

1. Using your bowl as a template draw a large circle around the red card.

2. Cut out the circle and place to one side. This will be the head of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

3. Next draw two caterpillar ears on the purple foam. Cut out and place to the side.

4. Draw two oval shape eyes using the yellow foam and cut out with the scissors.

5. Turn on the Glue gun to give it time to heat up.

6. Cut out two smaller oval eyes from the green foam and cut out.

Also cut out a circular nose for your caterpillar.

7. Now you have all the foam pieces you can use the glue gun to glue them in place. 

Stick the caterpillar ears to the back of the red card.

8. Now turn the card over and glue on the yellow oval eyes.

9. Allow a minute for the yellow eyes to cool and add the smaller green eyes.

10. Finally glue the little green nose and you will.

Have your very own The Very Hungry Caterpillar face.

11. You can use this activity to extend children’s interest in the. book, discuss colour, practice fine motor skills such as cutting and drawing and chat about the book.

Very Hungry Caterpillar Craft

This is a tutorial on how to make a caterpillar craft.

Materials

  • 1 piece of red card
  • 1 piece of green foam
  • 1 piece of yellow foam
  • 1 piece of purple foam
  • 1 glue gun and glue stick
  • 1 circular bowl as a template
  • 1 pencil or black pen

Tools

  • 1 pair of scissors

Instructions
