Did you know that the average span of a house is about 50 to 70 years? While plenty of homes have been around since the late 1800s and early 1900s, you can expect most homes to be around from the 1950s and onwards. Regardless of your home’s age, you will want to prolong its lifespan for as long as possible. Whether it’s a brand new home or not, it’s vital that this house can last as long as possible. So, when it comes to your house, here are some ways to feel assured that you can extend its lifestyle.

Contents

  • Protect your home from the elements
  • Routine repair and maintenance
  • Keep it in good shape

Protect your home from the elements

Your house is going to be the biggest investment you’ll ever make. Your house, specifically the exterior, it’s constantly dealing with the elements throughout every season. This requires an investment in research and development and some elbow grease. A home is a precious commodity, but it can last a lifetime with the proper precautions.

Among the most effective are home inspections, weatherproofing, and insulation. These measures can help keep your home safe from Mother Nature’s wrath and ensure your resale value is top of the line. On top of this, you may need corrugated roofing sheets as rain, sleet, snow, and hail hit the roof. You cannot neglect the roof!

Routine repair and maintenance

Routine repair and maintenance is a critical parts of maximizing your house’s life span. It keeps each system in good working condition, keeping the entire building in efficient operating condition. For example, if you have an HVAC system and want to keep your home cool during the summer, you will want to have it checked and repaired by a professional at least every four years. If it needs to be in better shape, you will need to replace it with comparable commercially available parts.

The same goes for your foundation, which can become weak after exposure to harsh weather conditions. There are also some specific repairs and upgrades you can make to increase the lifespan of your home. Whether a homeowner or a landlord, you will need to take care of routine repair and maintenance to get the most out of your investment.

Keep it in good shape

Technically going hand-in-hand with a maintenance schedule, you’re also going to create a checklist of things you can do to keep your home in tip-top shape for years to come. This isn’t only about everything working the way it should and includes aesthetics. While you’re at it, you might also want to check out some of the newest trends in home enhancement.

For instance, installing a solar power system will help you to reduce your electricity bills, or if you don’t own a home, you could invest in a smart thermostat. Consider looking into the walls, countertops, doors, and all those nooks and crannies. Are they in good shape? Do they look as if they’re in good shape? This is something you’re not going to want to neglect!
