What Is The Story Of Halloween?
Halloween goes all the way back to 7th Century CE. The word itself actually means “hallowed evening.” Europeans that celebrated Halloween called it All Hallows Eve. Hallows translates to saints. It was coupled with All Saints’ Day. Both days paid homage to the saints. The name All Hallows Eve was shortened to Halloween which how we came to know and love the day Halloween.
Halloween falls on October 31 because of an ancient festival called Samhain. Samhain is considered the earliest known root of Halloween that occurred on this day. Samhain marked a pivotal time of the year when the seasons changed, but people also believed that the boundary between the next world and this world became thin which allowed them to connect with the dead. This is where Halloween gained its haunted connotations.
