Different Ways to Have Fun With Kids Without Spending a Lot of Money

When the kids are home from school, parents may need ways to keep them entertained. It may also feel good to take the kids out for a fun outing while on vacation in Jacksonville or some other warm locale. However, it may feel like a challenge to keep your children occupied when you have a limited entertainment budget.

Turn the Yard Into a Beach

You don’t need much to recreate the feeling of being at the beach. All it takes is a kiddie pool filled with water and a blanket laid out next to the sandbox to forget that you are in your own backyard. A beach ball, an umbrella and a cold drink may also come in handy. You might also want to visit the local park and have a picnic or adventure.

Spend the Afternoon Playing Video Games

While most parents don’t like the thought of their kids pushing buttons on a controller all day, video games can serve as a bonding experience. Whether you choose to play on the computer, on a phone or through a traditional console, there are games that are fun and appropriate for all ages. This may even be a good reason to get out your old video game systems and teach your kids what gaming was like in your day.

 Have an Outdoor Adventure

If there is a forest or park nearby, it may be possible to spend the time looking at birds or identifying different types of trees. Even if your kids don’t really care for nature, a walk in the forest will help get them some exercise as well as help them learn more about the world around them. Many parks are either free to enter or have relatively inexpensive admission prices.

Cook a Meal at Home

Instead of going out for dinner, teach the kids how to cook their own spaghetti or their own burgers. As a general rule, it is healthier to prepare a meal at home as opposed to going out to a restaurant. This is because you get to control the portion sizes as well as the fat content of the food being served. In addition to being healthier, it is generally less expensive to eat a meal cooked at home compared to eating at a restaurant.

Take a Trip to the Pet Store

If you can’t have a cat or dog in your home, visiting them at the pet store can be a fun experience for yourself and your kids. Pet stores may also have birds or other exotic animals to look at. Depending on when and where you go, it may be possible to pet, hold or otherwise interact with the animals. If there is one nearby, a trip to the zoo could also be an inexpensive and fun way to spend some quality time with the kids.

Just because you don’t have a lot of money doesn’t mean that you can’t have a good time with the kids. In addition to saving money, your kids can learn a new skill that will help them for the rest of their lives or gain an appreciation for nature that may last forever.
