Imagination is incredibly important for children as it helps them develop social and cognitive skills, which is why your child’s bedroom should be designed in a way that encourages their imagination.

This can sometimes seem a bit overwhelming – how do you design a space that’s adequate for learning and doing homework, playing, and that has a magical atmosphere that’s conducive for a child’s imagination? While the details depend on your child’s age and preferences, there are some ideas that can point you in the right direction.

1. The Basis

The first step to designing a great kid bedroom is to cover your basis. You always want to start with the bed, and depending on how old your child is, you might want to search for something like “Queen Size Mattresses – Best Selection” – for kids that are school-aged. That way they’ll not only be able to grow into their bed, but they’ll have enough room for a friend to sleep over. If your child is younger, you can try something similar, but of course smaller. Apart from that, a study desk, a chair, and a wardrobe are a must – adding anything else will have to depend on the room size. Once you have a strong foundation for your design, you can let your imagination run wild.

2. Choose A Theme

Consider what your child likes? Fairy tales, epic adventures, pirates? Whatever it is, you can probably find something that will inspire their bedroom design. Creating a story with your design and implementing elements from their favorite fictional world in it is a sure way to bring a bit of magic into their room. That said, you don’t necessarily want to be too obvious with it, as you want the room to grow and change with your child throughout the years. Besides, a bit of mystery is always more enticing, in the end. If they like princesses, adding a canopy over their bed could be a good idea. If they prefer pirates, going for nautical design elements with subtle pirate-themed clues might just be the way to go.

3. Play With Lights

The right lighting can add so much to the overall atmosphere of the room. A string of fairy lights – especially when placed behind a thin fabric – will make it seem as if the room is lit up by stars on a clear night. You can use this same technology behind the bed canopy to create an illusion of sleeping under the moon or try something similar with an LED strip that you can hide underneath the desk. A lamp shaped like something – whether it’s an animal or a cup of hot cocoa – can be both fun and functional, and can become a source of inspiration in their room.

4. Secret Compartments

Adding some hidden storage into the design can be a fun addition. You can create drawers inside of bookshelves, make secret compartments under the bed, or use some other creative ideas to hide things in plain sight. This is an idea that works well for both older and younger children – it doesn’t need to be big or overly elaborate, but it’s bound to create some excitement, especially if it provides enough storage to put all their prized possessions inside. If your carpentry skills are up to par, you can even create a tall shelf that has a secret double side that’s revealed when it’s rotated.

A child’s room should be fun for both you and them – finding the right bedroom design ideas can help you create a space that they will love to spend time in, which is the key to harnessing their imagination. By adding some little touches here and there, you can create an amazing place. If your child is old enough, it’s always a good idea to ask for their input and make the design process a collaborative effort.
