Looking After Your Child’s Health In The Summer

Summer brings with it the capacity for adventure and fun, but it can also be a dangerous time for kids who don’t take precautions. Most little ones will be lost in their own world and won’t be aware of the risks, so it’s up to all the parents to chase after them and worry on their behalf. If you know your children are going to be having a great time outdoors as the weather warms up, this list of tips will help you keep them healthy and happy all throughout the year.

Give them sunglasses

When the sun is shining it’s all too easy for your children’s eyes to become damaged by UVA and UVB rays. They might not notice the damage for a few years, but vision problems could start to occur as they get older.

Not only will their eyes be healthier with sunglasses, but they’ll be less likely to have accidents. It’s all too easy for little ones to walk out into the road when they’re shading their eyes or even trip over their own feet.

If you’re not sure your children will agree to wear their sunglasses, treat yourself to some too. Make sure you have some high-quality shades for the warmer seasons and pick your Oakley sunglasses online.

Don’t forget to reapply sun cream

Most parents will remember to put sun cream on their children in the morning, but sun cream needs to be reapplied, especially if your kids are playing outside all day.

Teach older children how to reapply sun cream at school so that they don’t get burned and make sure you always apply a new coat if they’ve been swimming.

Even water-resistant sun cream has its limits and it’s not worth taking any chances. Try to choose sun cream that has a high SPF and has been formulated especially for children to keep your kids as safe as possible.

Hydration

It’s much easier to become dehydrated in warmer weather than it is in the winter months. Active children who play outside in the sun are more likely to become dehydrated – and may also forget to drink water when they’re having fun.

Always carry a water bottle with you and encourage your kids to take a sip every now and again.  If your kids are fussy and don’t like water that’s been warmed by the heat of the day, then invest in a steel water bottle or a wide mouth water bottle that keeps liquids cool. This will help you keep on top of your child’s health in summer.

Alternatively, freeze a water bottle the night before they go to school so the kids can enjoy cold water well into the afternoon.

Stay out of the sun

Sometimes the sun is just too strong to be outside. If your kids have been playing outside all morning, make sure they stay inside for a few hours around midday. Treat them to an extended lunch and think of some fun games to play indoors. Alternatively, set up a little tent and some parasols outside so children can shelter from the direct sunlight.
