Clogged drains can be very disappointing as they slow everything down in your house, including cleaning. Trying to unclog your drainage system without any knowhow can be stressful, especially when not sure of exactly what to do.

To save time, you can always find a plumber to help you identify where the problem is, and determine the best solution. However, sometimes you don’t have enough money to hire a professional plumber. So, what do you do? In this article, we look at some of the easiest, and effective ways that you can use to unclog your drains at home. So, read on to find out.

Clean the Pipe

Of all the plumbing jobs, this one is the easiest that anyone can do without any help. First, place a bucket under the trap (U-shaped pipe) beneath your sink to help collect the water that might spill during the cleaning. Loosen all slip nuts on both sides of your pipe using a plumber’s wrench.

After removing the trap, turn it upside down to release any content that might be stuck inside.

You can also use your hand to reach out inside the pipe, and see whether there is some remaining debris. Using an old toothbrush can also help remove the tough materials easily. When you’re sure there is no more content inside the trap, rinse it then put it back. Doing so helps significantly to clear the clogging fast.

Use a Bent Wire Hanger

Using this method is extremely simple, but effective. To use this, take your regular wire hanger, and straighten it. Bend one side of it to make a hook. Push the wire inside your drain and fish for the contents.

Doing this for a few minutes should help you get materials such as hair, and papers that are blocking your drainage system. When done removing everything inside the drainage, run water through to ensure nothing is left behind that might cause clogging in the future.

Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

This method might sound unrealistic, but it is very useful. Mix ⅓ cup of baking soda with about the same amount of Vinegar into your measuring cup. The mixture will fizz quickly, allowing you to pour it in the clogged drain immediately. The fizzing helps you remove hair, and grime that’s blocking your pipes. After pouring the mixture inside your drain, wait for an hour, or even longer for better results. Flush with lots of hot water afterwards to help clear the clogging entirely.

Using a Vacuum Cleaner

If you own a vacuum cleaner, then it can help you significantly to unclog your drains easily and effectively. First, you need to set your cleaner to vacuum liquids. Make sure you cover up your vent to avoid creating a huge mess, then seal the drain.

You can also get creative and use an old plunger head to help seal the drain properly. Turn on your vacuum cleaner to its highest setting. Doing this allows you to utilise the machine’s power to draw all the clog from your drain into the vacuum bag. That way, you can easily unclog your drains allowing water to flow smoothly.

Use Boiling Water

Boiling water is always effective as it can easily remove stuff like hair and debris inside your drainage system. So, boil a lot of water, then pour it down your drain slowly about two or three times. Ensure you let the hot water work for some seconds before you pour more.

After doing this severally, you’ll hear the contents that were clogging your drainage moving down slowly. When this happens, heat more water, and pour it continuously to clear the drainage completely of even the tiniest particle.

Caustic Soda

To use this method, you need eye protection, and clean rubber gloves because caustic soda usually causes some chemical reactions. Pour about ¾ gallon of water inside your bucket, then add about 3 cups of this chemical. Use a wooden spoon to stir up the mixture for about a minute.

Stirring the mixture causes it to fizz and produce a lot of heat. When this happens, pour it inside the blocked drain, and leave it to work for around 20, or even 30 minutes, then flush with lots of boiling water.

You can even repeat this process twice to ensure you remove the entire clogging. Caustic soda is easily accessible, thus making it a great option. However, be careful when using it to avoid causing any damage.

Use Salt and Baking Soda

To use these two easy to get items effectively, mix ½ cup table salt with the same amount of baking soda. Stir the combination for a few seconds, then pour it into the drain. Leave the mixture inside your drain for about 10-20 minutes, then add some boiling water inside. Doing this makes the boiling water, table salt, and baking soda to react inside the drain. This reaction is always effective as it dissolves even stubborn blockages leaving your drainage clean and free.

Use Baking Soda, Vinegar, Pressure and Gravity

This trick is mostly suitable for clogged bathtub drains. For this, mix up some baking soda and Vinegar, pour the combination in your drain, then place a stopper over it. Wait for around 45 minutes, or even an hour, then fill your bathtub with water. After the tub is full, remove the stopper.

Doing this will make the 40-60 gallons of water to get out with lots of pressure enough to help remove the entire blockage that is already loosened by the baking soda, and Vinegar. That way, you quickly unclog your drain allowing you to have baths without worrying about clogging anymore.
