A Tisket A Tasket is a nursery rhyme that you just can’t help getting stuck in your head. The great thing about getting this fun rhyme stuck in your students’ heads is that you can use this rhyme to teach various academic concepts as well as build confidence in reading.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to understand the concept of alliteration or repetitive sounds.
  • Students will be able to identify rhyming words.
  • Students will be able to identify the color words green and yellow.
  • Students will be able to orally recite the song and read it.
  • Students will be able to track print from left to right.

Lessons and Activities

Teaching the above lesson objectives with this nursery rhyme is super easy. But, here are some things you can do to scaffold their learning experience:

  1. Talk about alliteration and point it out in the text. Ask students to come up with a silly sentence using their name. Example: Silly Sally Smiled or Tiny Timmy Talked.
  2. Talk about rhyming words on another day. Point out all the words that sound the same.
  3. Put rhyming words on note cards and have students match the two words that rhyme.
  4. Give students a copy of the nursery rhyme so they can “read” it together with you.
  5. Build reading confidence by having students read the rhyme to you individually.
  6. Have students color the word green and yellow with the right colors. Then, reinforce color word recognition with this Color Matching Popsicle Stick Craft.

A Tisket A Tasket Words

Here are the words for the song A Tisket A Tasket.

A-tisket a-tasket

A green and yellow basket.

I wrote a letter to my love

And on the way I dropped it.

I dropped it,

I dropped it,

And on the way I dropped it.

A little boy he picked it up and put it in his pocket.
